u-blox, an international provider of positioning and wireless communication technology and services, has introduced u-safe, a safety solution for vehicle positioning, designed to accelerate the adoption of autonomous vehicles.
Following the recent announcement of a partnership between u-blox and CAV navigation solutions provider GMV, u-safe was introduced as part of the companies’ aim to bring functional and safe E2E positioning solutions to the automotive industry.
Based on existing safe components already tested in autonomous driving conditions, u-safe is designed to be integrated into future-proof advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
u-blox says that typical use cases include ADAS Level 3 and above applications requiring high-integrity and functional safety features and that ADAS Level 2+ applications can also use the solution to ensure that those systems are adaptable and ready for a transition into higher levels of automation.
Peter Kalinowski, director of product management for safety critical products at u-blox, said, “Autonomous driving represents the most significant revolution in the automotive industry. While humans deal with risks daily, accidents involving autonomous vehicles have far-reaching consequences. Ensuring safety is paramount.”
u-blox’s aim is “to take global navigation satellite system (GNSS) localization to a new level”, and the company states that the integration of u-safe into ADAS and autonomous driving stacks offers functional safety, high-integrity and trustworthy positioning solution.
Kalinowski added, “Undoubtedly, the foremost requirement for customer acceptance and widespread deployment of automated driving systems is to ensure safety … Our mission is to deliver the next generation of seamless, safe positioning solutions that enable vehicle autonomy.”
