Hyundai Motor Company has released a campaign film showcasing its all-electric, self-driving Ioniq 5 robotaxi successfully passing a simulated US driver’s license test.
Equipped with advanced sensors, including lidar, radar and cameras, the vehicle aims to ensure consistent performance across diverse driving environments.
The film underscores Hyundai’s vision of ‘Progress for Humanity,’ which sees it focus on inclusivity as it strives to provide “freedom of movement to everyone”.
The autonomous driving technology integrated into Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 was developed in collaboration with Motional and is designed to assure safety and reliability and bring positive change to customers’ daily lives. The video depicts the Ioniq 5 robotaxi undergoing a series of real-world driving tests, including navigating the bustling streets of Las Vegas, Nevada.
The film features an interview with Pearl Outlaw, a visually impaired individual who experiences mobility challenges due to her condition, retinitis pigmentosa.
Pearl’s story sheds light on the obstacles faced by those with physical impairments, highlighting the significance of autonomous driving technology in granting independence. For Pearl, the Ioniq 5 robotaxi represents an opportunity for independent mobility and the freedom to explore without depending on others.
The video shows the Ioniq 5 navigating both urban and suburban Las Vegas environments, demonstrating its capabilities in various driving scenarios. Under the scrutiny of seasoned professional examiner Kandice Jones, the Ioniq 5 impresses with its speed control, lane changes and prompt reactions to potential hazards.
“I’m a DMV certified driving examiner with 25 years of experience. In that time, I’ve failed thousands and thousands of students in the interest of public safety,” said Jones, the examiner who tested the Ioniq 5 robotaxi.
“It’s going to be the same criteria – just like testing a human. We’ll be monitoring the speed, lane changes. I’m going to grade maneuvers, making a complete stop, left turns, maintaining the lane, and of course reaction time.”
Hyundai states that the test results show the vehicle’s ability to handle real-world driving situations.
“As a company that pursues freedom of mobility, we at Hyundai aim to exhibit the safety and trustworthiness of the Ioniq 5 robotaxi through this campaign,” said Sungwon Jee, senior VP and global chief marketing officer at Hyundai Motor Company.
“We will continue our efforts to communicate our AI-based autonomous driving technology, which is set to provide positive changes to our customers’ everyday lives.”
