Zoox, a company focused on developing safe and comfortable robotaxi rides, has announced plans to begin testing in two new cities: Austin, Texas, and Miami, Florida. These will be the fourth and fifth cities where Zoox has conducted public testing.
The company began its testing operations in San Francisco in 2018, moved to Las Vegas in 2019 and expanded to Seattle in 2021. According to a Zoox statement, this new expansion to the East Coast represents a strategic effort to gather data and refine the firm’s technology in varied environments.
Ron Thaniel, senior director of policy and regulatory affairs at Zoox, said, “We’re laying the foundations for our autonomous ride-hailing service in new cities across the US. Austin and Miami offer key learning opportunities that will support the continued growth and refinement of our testing and service.”
Initial testing phases
Before commencing testing, Zoox will conduct brief mapping missions in both cities.
Following this, the company will deploy a fleet of retrofitted Toyota Highlanders equipped with safety drivers. These tests will initially focus on small areas near business and entertainment districts, allowing Zoox to collect insights and feedback crucial for the development of its autonomous driving systems.
The testing approach involves identifying specific pre-planned routes that present challenging driving scenarios, as well as randomly selected point-to-point routes within a defined geofence. This methodology helps fine-tune the autonomous systems to handle dense urban environments effectively, as outlined in a company statement.
Austin and Miami
Both cities present unique driving conditions that will help refine Zoox’s technology. Austin is known for its horizontal traffic lights, railway crossings and severe thunderstorms, while Miami features traffic lights suspended diagonally across intersections. The company says the data gathered from these environments will be invaluable for Zoox as it prepares for wider deployment.
Zoox has emphasized a collaborative approach with local officials, regulators and residents to ensure the safe integration of its services.
While public rides in Austin and Miami are not yet available, Zoox continues to target Las Vegas and San Francisco for its first commercial markets. Future expansions to additional cities are also being considered.
Further updates on Zoox’s developments are expected as testing continues.
