UTAC has announced the conclusion of the SECUR (Safety Enhancement Through Connected Users on the Road) project, which was launched in 2020. Led by UTAC, the study brought together some 20 international players from the automotive and V2X ecosystem to explore the potential of vehicle connectivity to improve the safety of various road users. The partners met at the Teqmo facility on March 29 and 30 to close the project by formally presenting results. There were also demonstrations with four vehicles and two bicycles connected via V2X.
The original aim of SECUR was to define a proposal for V2X testing and assessment protocols for Euro NCAP. As a first step, the most frequent and severe accident scenarios found on European roads were identified. Then, current knowledge on V2X communication systems was analyzed. Next, multi-technology connected targets were specified and developed and then use cases were derived from accident research and mapped with V2X technology types and messages, the latter being seen as a new sensor. Finally, a SECUR V2X roadmap was drawn up as an input for NCAP assessment from 2026 until 2032.
The results reported at the event consisted of a summary of the accident data study focusing on Europe, under which 15 main road accident scenarios and their parameters were identified; a summary of current active safety test targets, such as soft dummies, and the various test set-ups utilizing these; a summary of the current knowledge of V2X technologies and the market; plus SECUR’s proposal for testing V2X.
