TÜV SÜD experts were involved in Singapore’s Technical Reference 68 (TR 68), the world’s first set of national guidelines for fully autonomous vehicles. TR 68 gives clear specifications for OEMs and other developers of autonomous technology and could be used as a blueprint for future international standards.
The German multinational engineering consultancy and inspection company contributed its expertise in the fields of operational and functional safety, cybersecurity and vehicular data – three of the four working groups that were part of the effort in formulating the standards.
“We’re proud that our experts have been able to help develop TR 68. This collaboration has offered us valuable insight into the development work behind autonomous driving as a whole – in Germany and worldwide. TR 68 formulates clear (national) guidelines for the development of fully autonomous vehicles – a world first,” said Dr Houssem Abdellatif, global head HAD at TÜV SÜD.
An industry-led effort, four working groups comprising representatives from the AV industry, research institutions, institutes of higher learning and government agencies developed standards in the four key areas – vehicle behavior, vehicle functional safety, cybersecurity and data formats.

He will be speaking more about it during his presentation ‘Defining and assessing Level 4/5 AV capabilities through physical testing’, at Autonomous Vehicle Test & Development Symposium.
