A Nissan Leaf operated by British research project HumanDrive has completed a 230-mile self-navigated journey to learn about real-world driving conditions.
The journey from Cranfield to Sunderland in the UK covered a range of roads including country lanes with minimal or no road markings, junctions, roundabouts (traffic circles) and highways. A key aspect of the project was to develop an autonomous vehicle control system to ensure customers have a familiar and comfortable experience.
The Grand Drive came as UK-based consortium members investigated how autonomous driving can emulate a natural, human-like driving style.
The HumanDrive project is jointly funded by the UK government through the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles and Innovate UK with nine other consortium partners.
