GMV has announced that BMW Group has chosen it to supply its next generation of positioning technology for automated driving. This follows another contract provided by the German auto maker to GMV to develop GNSS systems in 2019.
The Spanish technology group’s positioning solution comprises two components: an onboard Positioning Engine software (PE) and a GNSS Corrections Service (CS) providing the vehicles with corrections to the Broadcast GNSS Ephemeris, augmentation data and safety-related information.
CS and PE have evolved in recent years to be able to cope with the requirements laid down by the different GNSS-based high-accuracy positioning markets for which ISO 26262 and ISO 21448 (SOTIF) have been adopted.
“GMV has been investing for many years in the key GNSS technologies that the most demanding OEMs will require for its automated driving systems,” said Miguel Ángel Martínez Olagüe, general manager of intelligent transportation systems at GMV. “For our company, this new contract with the BMW Group represents a unique opportunity to consolidate as leaders in the supply of reliable positioning information, providing a product with outstanding performance for the automotive industry.”
GMV says this milestone will allow it to capitalize on the work carried out so far and bring to market an enhanced product to meet the demanding needs of automated driving. It will include features targeting the increase of the operational design domain of the localization function on highways, the improvement of performance in urban environments and the incorporation of further constellations into the ones currently used.
